Hsin-ping-hsi Electric Coal Mine Railway

Text & Photo by Chih-wen Hung

There were many mining railways built in Taiwan history. These primarily served coal mines but several served gold mines. The railways used small steam or diesel locomotives but some operated electric locomotives. The most famous electrified coal mining railway operated until early 1990s was the railway owned by Hsin-ping-hsi Coal Mine near TRA's Ping-hsi line. It was closed in late 1990s, but now re-opens as a tourist railway. The following photos were taken in early 1990s.
