On September 21st, 1999, there was a massive earthquake in central Taiwan which killed over 3,000 people.
The Alishan Railway (comprising the Chia-yi to Alishan main line, the Mien-yuei branch line and the Chu-shan branch line) was seriously damaged. The major loss was the collapse of the head of Monkey Rock, the landmark of the Mien-yuei branch line. This article is the journal of my trip made only 12 days before the earthquake on September 9th and 10th.
