I had a great trip to Austria in July 2001. In this page, I would like to give you some idea about the Osterreichische Bundebahn (OBB, meaning Austrian Federal Railway) locomotives and coaches.

OBB Locomotives

Currently, the most popular locomotives on the OBB lines might be class 1044 and 1042. Some of them wear the old livery (red color with light yellow stripes), but many of them have the new livery (red and dark gray). I was lucky to see a class 1010 locomotive wearing even older dark green in Salzburg. I am not sure why this kind of livery still appears on a locomotive working on daily-based service. Besides these locomotives, newcomers as class 1822 or class 1016 can be seen on the line, too.

OBB Passenger Cars

EUROFIMA

EUROFIMA coaches are used in major OBB EC (EuroCity) trains. EUROFIMA is an organization formed by several European railways to develop the railroad cars. Having one basic design from EUROFIMA, it was possible to produce lots of coaches and reduce the cost. Almost all the EUROFIMA cars used by OBB now were painted in red/gray livery. The EUROFIMA fleets includes 1 class. 1+2 class, 2 class, 2 class+baggage, dinning carˇK.etc.

Intercity and domestic Coaches

There are basically two types of liveries can be seen on the Intercity and domestic trains. The red/light yellow livery is still used on many coaches. This painting style looks like JNR's livery for Diesel Car (such as Kiha58). The newer livery applied by OBB is light gray/red for single or double level cars. Many of them has letters with "City Shuttle" on the body.

EMUs

There are 3 major types of EMUs can be seen on the line. Class 4010 was original used for Intercity service and painted in gray/blue, but now are in red/white/gray livery. Class 4030 can be seen in Wien area for S-bahn service. Class 4020 can be seen in S-bahn, too; however, I saw it in Innsbruck as well. The painting colors of Class 4020 in Wien and in Innsbruck areas have small differences. The blue for both 4020s are the same, but the white part on Wien's cars is still in light yellow for those used in Innsbruck area.
