I got my first jazz record when I was 15. It's " Concorde" from Modern Jazz Quartet. But the first tune I had heard was from Wes Montgomery. It was the summer of 1983 when the dress and hair code were strictly enforced.
I personally think John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Stan Getz are not good enough to speak for our generation. Murakami was a college student in 69, five years after Getz made the Bossa Nova cut and Davis switched to Bitch Brew.
These days I am very fond of some particular types of acid jazz. Like Roy Ayers, Sweetback, Incognito, etc. And somehow later I made it to Jamiroquai and some classical soul.
Yet I still need time to find the little something behind these.
